Why I prefer to start do plan and create a room decor with the textiles (fabrics, upholstery, draperies, rugs, bed covers...)?
- It is a terrific start for colours.
- It is easier to match a fabric colour with a wall paint, than the other way around.
- Industry is able to match any given colour pretty easy now a days.
Area rugs add style and intimacy
Besides being a good start point to dress a room and adding a finishing touch, a rug also gives definition to a space, provides warmth, elegance and even luxury.
In the practical side it reduces noise levels, protect the flooring and can provide a focal point and/or add colour.
A runner is a stair case serves as beauty,
underpad adds comfort for the walkers and it helps to protect the wood. It is much easier to clean than wall to wall carpeting that collects dirt on the corners.
When a rug is well selected it sets the boundaries and anchor furniture groups. This unifies and completes any given room.
Fiber: natural X synthetic
Most machine made rugs use synthetic fibers as nylon, acrylic and polyester. They can be used in wet areas as bath, kitchen, muddy room, garage, entrance hall and laundry because they are so practical.
Among the natural fibers as in cotton, wool and silk, wool represents the more resistant natural fiber. It is environmentally friendly, renewable and a sustainable product that is a classical since ancient times. This is my choice of fiber.
It is used to make the French
aubusson, the best Belgium carpets, the famous Portuguese
Arraiolo, the tribal rugs from Africa and North America and the
CASA needlepoint area rugs mostly depicted on this page.
Using Design and Character to define a rug
There are lots of choices. I do recommend the best: wool. Hand made. Oriental or occidental.
Because natural wools contains lanolin that repels dirty. Wool rugs are soft with low lusters.
Long term performance, long life span and easy maintenance, add to the cost benefit.
Oriental versus occidental tradition
The Persian, Turkish and Pakistani rug designs are timeless
classicals that can be used in contemporary ambiances as well as in more traditional. It comes in elaborate designs and bold colours.
The European tradition of area rugs have the French, Portugal and Belgium as their highlight manufacturers.
Now in Ottawa you can have the size, pattern and colour you want
Thanks to the crafts of approximately two thousand women who depend on the hand made needle point rugs to provide for them and their families.
They live in Brazil are got organized in cooperatives, mostly work from home. For more than thirty years I have been a promoter and a great enthusiast of their perfect work. I step every day in my first white and blue rug. A gift from the creator of the rug industry. It looks great and perfect after so long. I can show it to you.
Size matters
DinningFor dinning areas, the rug looks and work its best when it is 3' larger than the width and length of your table. So guests can seat comfortable and the chair legs still sit on the top of the rug, even when someone pulls it to seat.
Living
For a living room it is best when both front and back legs of the furnishings are on top of the carpet. Or one can use the same measure of the length and width of the furniture.
Can be placed just under the coffee table with at least one feet extra around it, or simply touch the main sitting pieces.
Bedroom
For a luxury look consider using a larger rug underneath the bed plus an extra 2 to 3 feet around it.
It also looks good the use of 2 runners, one each side of the bed, or 3 runners, the last being for the feet of the bed.
For the minimalist a small rug to step out of the bed would do.
Do not forget stair case runners and to finish corridors and halls
